Tocopherols are a group of fat-soluble chemical compounds of similar chemical structure (homologous compounds) with strong antioxidant properties. They have multiple physiological effects and are needed by the human body in small amounts through food.
Collectively, tocopherols are known as vitamin E and are found in vegetable oils and generally in plant-based foods. Tocopherols are distinguished by the letters of the Greek alphabet in: α, β, γ, δ, ε, ζ and η.
The most important of these is α-tocopherol (d-alpha-tocopherol), as it is characterized by better absorption and bioavailability and in this form the majority of clinical trials have been conducted. Vitamin E is one of the most important vitamins as it helps * protect cells from oxidative stress.
